Peter Weiler Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations of The Pennsylvania State University.
Peter Weiler was born in Hartford, Connecticut,
and raised in Vermont. He holds a bachelor of
arts degree in psychology and a master’s
degree in higher education administration from
the University of Vermont. He continued his
education at UCLA taking post-graduate work
in higher education administration.
Weiler began his career in higher education
administration at UCLA in 1979 as assistant
director of undergraduate orientation programs.
In 1980, he was appointed assistant dean of
students and later promoted to associate dean
of students.
In 1986 he returned to the University of Vermont
as their first major gifts officer. While there,
he organized and implemented a major gifts team
to support the Campaign for Vermont, a $100
million effort. In 1988, he was appointed director
of alumni relations.
Peter eventually became assistant vice president
and executive director of the Penn State Alumni
Association. In that position, he oversaw the
largest dues-paying association of its kind
in North America with over 140,000 members and
209 chapters worldwide.
In May of 1996, Peter was named associate
vice president for development and alumni relations
at Penn State. He oversees Penn State’s
development programs, including the central
functions of planned giving, annual giving,
corporate and foundation relations, and the
development activity in more than 27 colleges
and units. He has acted as a consultant to several
other universities in the area of institutional
advancement and served on several CASE commissions
and boards. Penn State recently finished its
seven year Grand Destiny Campaign surpassing
its $1.3 billion goal.
Peter is active in the community and has served
on the board of several local charities including
United Way, chairing the Centre County United
Way campaign effort in 2002; Centre County Community
Foundation; the Central Pennsylvania Festival
for the Arts; and The Second Mile. He serves
as President of the Board for The Village at
Penn State, a local life care retirement community.
He was named an honorary alumnus of Penn State
in 1995.
He and his wife, Karen Fisher Weiler of Burlington,
Vermont, have three children: Jamie, 19; Griffin,
16; and Mac, 13.
